Data Center Technician entails the act of setting up servers including their hardware, diagnosing and solving network problems, and controlling power and cooling. It will mean that you will interact with the engineering and operations departments, gather user feedback, and make documentation. Minimum qualification for Data Center Technician:

  1. Diploma of College Studies in Computer Science or Electronics, or equivalent practical experience.
  2. Experience with hardware and operating systems (e.g., Linux), and networking protocols.
  3. Experience in network administration, and with light coding or scripting.
  4. Ability to communicate in English and French fluently to support client relationship management in this region.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience working with Linux (Red Hat, Slackware, Fedora, SUSE, Ubuntu, Debian, Gentoo) Unix (Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, BSD), or another similar operating system.
  • Understanding of intermediate OS, PC hardware, and networking concepts, tools, and protocols.
  • Responsibilities:
  • Contribute to and lead efforts/projects in the deployment, maintenance, and support of current and new data center infrastructure.
  • Lead complex troubleshooting and resolve critical or escalated technical issues over a population of affected equipment.
  • Help test and troubleshoot new complex server hardware components and designs.
  • Configure and troubleshoot OS-related issues on servers.

Skills Required for Data Center Technicians:

  1. Technical Expertise: Sound knowledge of server hardware, installation, and management of both the software and the physical components.
  2. Networking Knowledge: Skills needed: good understanding of network concepts and protocols, ability to solve problems.
  3. Problem-Solving: High level of problem-solving ability complemented by initiative to solve problems before they escalate.
  4. Physical Capability: This would entail the strength to have the capacity to lift and transport bulky apparatus in a data center setting.
  5. Communication: Proficiency in oral and written communication for logical cooperation with other personnel.
  6. Documentation: Both of the skills involve the ability to create and maintain technical documentation for processes and systems.
  7. Flexibility: Flexibility to work under shift system including shift duties during evening and/or weekends.
    Scripting and Automation: Scripting languages, such as Python or Bash, should be known at least at the basic level.
